Death wobble at high speed, after contacting highway \"rumble strips\"

I am an unemployed, single parent with a 17 yr.old son with multiple disabilities. At present, my 1994 Grand Jeep Cherokee is in the shop (to date) for the 15th million repair. I cannot afford another vehicle, and have had to spend multiple dollars just trying to keep that thing on the road. I also spend a lot of money on my son’s medical/Hospital expenses. Due to his Heart condition, he receives around the clock nursing care, which I am paying a lot of out-of-pocket expenses. Recently in the past year, my son and I began to smell strong “Gas” fumes coming thru the vents inside the vehicle. Over time, the smell increased & became stronger. In June 2011, I had to stop driving my Jeep, & it placed it in the shop. I have read recent information concerning the request for mass recalls of the 1993-2004 Grand Jeep Cherokee”s. If you don’t own one, you wont understand the multiple problems that they have. I am driving a “ticking” time bomb, & I am desperate for some advice. I cannot continue to put my life as well as my “Autistic” Son’s life in jeopardy. Thank You in advance for your time.

the steering completely went out. ( failed) wile we were driving. thank goodness we were driving slow. NOTE; I found 2500 other Jeeps on the web with the same problem.

THE CAR HAS A LOT OF PROBLEMS HOW ENGINE, BRAKES ,MUFFLER,SOUNDS,ELECTRICS ,TURN OFF IN ANY MOMENT AND THE DEALER SAIS THE THEY WILL REPAIR BUT I JUST HAVE 1 MONTH OF GARANTY AND THE CAR HAD BEEN 3 TIMES IN THE MECHANIC BUT THE PROMBLEM CONTINUE I DO NOT WHAT CAN I DO THEY DO NOT REPAIR THE CAR WELL THEY ARE WAITING FOR THE GARANTY EXPIRE .

My Jeep has intermittent engine miss,it idles very roughly and stalls. Difficulty starting – sometimes not at all (cold temps?). Will not give diagnostic codes. Have had Manifold Pressure sensor, coolant temp sensor, ignition wires,PCV Valve replaced, plus tune-up and service – ALL FOR NOTHING! It is exactly the same as before and now it stalls more frequently. My mechanic has NO idea what\’s wrong with it. I saw a Safety Bulletin (after the fact) on this problem. Isn\’t there ANYTHING I can do? I cannot afford more useless \"repairs\" I don\’t want to put any more money into this problem – especially if others are experiencing it too!

I recently purchased from a private party a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4×4 v-8. Within weeks, and about 400 miles we noticed strong fuel odor, not exhaust. I crawled under the Jeep (never off road and immaculate body/Interior) there is alot of fuel leaking down around the transfercase from close to the frame. Actually dripping from the transfercase area. Fearful to drive it anywhere. Smells strong and getting ill over past few weeks until noticed it. Severe headaches, nausea, chest pains. Please help. Are there recalls for this? I am out of work. Need vehicle to look for work and drive cross county back home from Florida to California.

Involved in a front end collision on 11/5/2007 with extensive front end damage to vehicle. air bag did not deploy and driver (who was wearing a seat belt) sustained a fracture to the sternum with considerable pain after. inspection of the vehicle revealed that the left air bag sensor was broken as a result of the accident, but air bag still did not deploy. at no time did the air bag indicated that there was a possible defect in the system. *tr

My rear liftgate door hatch when opened fully will not stay up. it falls down all the time and if you are not aware of this it will hit you on your head. you have to hold it up. i have been in contact with chrysler and they claim this is not a warranty issue. the representative informed me it is my responsibility and my problem to repair it. this is a safety issue not a mechanical warranty problem. *nm

Vehicle will stall out when the tilt wheel is utilized, this can happen at any time while the engine is engaged. it appears that wires are being stretched within the steering system. p41/nhtsa 14v-438 dealt with this issue in the "05 model.

Takata recall: approx june of 2015 after going to the oregon city dump while sitting at the light waiting for the light to change. the airbag just went off no reason no accident and gave a bloody nose. he had to change the steering wheel because of it. but now i'm scared to drive it and it just sits.

Jeep towing packages and fuel tanks recalled due to the vehicle catching fire during car crashes.i did not get a notice for repair options.

Going down i-70 east somewhere between denver and strasburg, co the vehicle starting losing power. i pulled over onto the shoulder to call my grandson. then the car starting filling with smoke after a few minutes. another driver stopped and ran up to me saying he didn't know if i knew my car was on file. i got out, and the rear end was on fire. you could see fuel leaking which was on fire as it leaked. i was afraid it was going to blow up. i called 911, and the police and fire department came. in the meantime, there was snow on the ground and people were throwing snow onto the fire. the fire burned the inside of the car up to the front seat. i had to sell it for junk. there should be a police report. i received recall notices after i sold my vehicle.

Emergency brake handle release button & spring fell off. jeep was stationary had a hard time try to release it. they show a recall only for 1995 id# 95v172000. need to get it fixed. asap

1994 jeep grand cherokee was placed on recall list of chrysler to install trailer hitch. recall service stated rust and corrosion level 5 unable to complete recall. i then took my car to a muffler shop and had it raised to see what was going on. i saw no extreme amount of rust that would have prevented them from performing the recall work. i asked the mechanic if they could install a trailer hitch to my car, they said for a fee. i truly believe that they did not want to complete the work, because they couldn't make any money off of it. another thing, i want considered is the fact, that my car is at least 21 years old, so there might possibly be rust, but not to the level that would prevent them from completing the installation.

Drove to my friends house with lights on when got ready to leave had no lights had to leave jeep until next day. no tail lights on passenger side. but have flashlights turn signals don't work can't even drive it anymore.

This vehicle, along with other grand cherokees made in 1994, 1995 and 1996 allows the security system to shut it down completely when it is stopped or moving very slowly. chrysler acknowledges there is a problem and changed the design in 1996 (the security system was/is wired into the vehicle itself). i have been stranded many times, sometimes in dangerous places, and had to have it towed at now-significant cumulative cost. the vehicle is now deconstructed at courtesy dodge in grand rapids with a new battery and everything in good working condition-- and only 117,000 miles on it. i can't drive nor can i sell it-- and chrysler refuses to do anything about it. *tr

Got letter of recall n45, took to dealer told needed oem trailer hitch & referred us to tom bell collision center, they stated it couldn't be done until jeep bumper/rear end was fixed cost of $150.00, didn't have the money until 03/17/2015. on 03/17/2015, took back jeep to tbcc was told by [xxx] that the work should be done if [xxx]. [xxx] gave us the quote in 2014. came in & confirm the quote stating there no problem & the oem trailer hitch would be installed. we left vehicle & expected to be called. 24 hours later we still hadn't been called so we called tom bell collision & s/w crystal who in turn referred us to . stated jeep didn't need any work and the hitch was put in & that he didn't understand what they were suppose to charge us for. went to p/u jeep & there was no hitch installed. s./w [xxx] again and she stated that she was going to call , we waited by the jeep. [xxx] came back & stated that a sticker that told "how to put the hitch on" was placed on the vehicle, we asked where since my wife & i got under the vehicle to see if any work was done. she didn't know, but she quoted as to nothing needed to be done but the sticker. how is this sticker suppose to save any lives in the vehicle if we get hit, they might as well put a band aid on the problem, literally. now i've tried calling the recall center at (800) 853-1403 stayed on the phone for over two hours and no one answers but a recording of music. then we called the vehicle safety hotline at (888) 327-4236 s/w a [xxx] got a ref# [xxx] & was told to call the manufacturer at (800) 992-1997 & we been on hold for 48 minutes and still holding. what needs to be done to get any one to listen or fix this problem....a lawsuit? i also would like to know what happened to the oem trailer hitch that tbcc received back in 2014 since it wasn't used on my vehicle. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Incident occurred twice in one day. had occurred before, but very infrequently. driving around 66 miles per hour on a highway, the car hit a slight bump in the road and began to shake, violently and uncontrollably. the front end of the car shakes so severely that i am forced to slow down to under 15 mph to stop it. the problem again occurred later that same day, on a different road (a major u.s interstate), traveling at about the same or perhaps slightly greater speed. the bump that i hit was very small, but the shaking that came after caused me to shift lanes and pull off on the shoulder of the interstate to make it stop. all together, i would say that this has occurred with my vehicle about 8 or 9 times, but was thought to be fixed several years ago (by a mechanic admittedly not associated with jeep). the problem went away for a while but is obviously returning and getting worse. some other jeep owners refer to it as the death-wobble, do to the violent and alarming nature of the shaking. *tr

We are on a recall notice (n45 nhtsa 13v-252) original equipment manufacturer (oem) trailer hitch. i received the safety recall notice from chrysler yesterday 1/16/2014. i called ziegler jeep, 208 w. golf road, schaumburg illinois 60194 (847) 882-8400 to schedule an appointment to have the recall fixed. i talked to a man in service and he told me they have no parts to fix the recall and he does not know when they are going to come in and that i have to keep calling periodically to see if they have the repair parts. this is unsatisfactory. if i get in an accident because they have no parts, this is unacceptable. you sent the recall notice out. why don't the dealers have the part to repair the car? i am making it clear, right now, that i have done my part. now why can't jeep do theirs and fix my car? why is it my job to keep calling back. why isn't there a list being made by the dealer so he knows when he gets his parts, who gets the parts first? updated 02/03/14

Driving 25 mph and turned knob to put on heat and thick, brown smoke coming out of vents immediately filled car. i stopped and looked under hood. i could see a pipe where smoke seemed to be originating but don't know what it is called. when smoke cleared and i didn't see anything leaking under the car, i started to drive as called service station a few blocks away. they said to bring it over but upon driving about 50 more feet smoke got worse; became thicker and black. i stopped and turned engine off and got out of the car and when i turned to look at the car, it was already up in flames coming from under the hood. it took only a couple of minutes and the entire car was ablaze. *tr

We had two (2) goodyear viva ii tires put on the rear of our jeep, size p215/75r15, at walmart service center at 3400 north 85th st, lincoln, ne 68507 on 07-27-2013 and then two (2) more goodyear viva ii tires put on the front on 8/7/2013. after having the first 2 tires put on the rear, we noticed indents in the sidewalls going all the way up to the treads. i spoke to the technician about this and the technician said that it was not a defect, that this was the strongest part of the tire. the technician stated that this is what they told him in the training course. after having the front tires put on, we noticed the same indents in the tires but they were more severe. before the tires were put on, i told the technician to torque the lug nuts to 85 ft/lbs as that is what the jeep manufacturer manual states. the technician refused and told us that he torqued every wheel at 100 ft/lbs because this is what he was told to do in his training. my wife, spoke with customer service at goodyear the next morning about our concerns about defective tires and she began a claim immediately. she had us take our vehicle to graham tire in lincoln where they put 4 new upgraded goodyear wrangler tires on our vehicle immediately. during the tire switch out, graham tire showed us that the front face of the rotor was badly bent due to the rotor not sitting on the stud correctly and the walmart technician over-torqued them at 100 ft/lbs when they should have been torqued at 85 ft/lbs according to the jeep manufacturers manual. we had the rotor and studs replaced by graham tire and walmart paid for this work and parts. every tire and rim is torqued differently according to the manuals. walmart is torqueing lug nuts at 100 ft/lbs and will not listen to manufacture specs. this should be investigated because wheel studs are going to break and wheels are going to come off vehicles.

I have been having problems with gas fume and pressure build up for a long time. when i open the gas cap, it spews out gas fumes and gas at me. then it runs badly if at all. i do not like this jeep. problem vehicle. high desert temperatures make it worse. i live in the desert. *tr

The first month or so, my car would randomly die on me, whether i was stopped at a red light, or driving, regardless what speed i was going. i was able to start the car up immediately afterwards and continue like nothing happened. a few weeks later it wouldn't start at all.called mechanic, he changed the coil. drove great for a month or so. then it started doing the same thing. took the jeep to the shop. had fuel filter, fuel pump put in. ran good for a couple of weeks before it started all over again . progressively got worse. this time before it died it would buck violently a few times due to dying and starting itself up while driving, accompanied with a really weird odor, like rotten eggs. i then pulled over, turn the car off and check to see if my car was on fire (not). started the car and drove home ,(7 miles). the next day in the process of taking the jeep to the shop, the jeep bucked on and off 3 different times, the smell was intense when a glowing fireball launched out from the rear the size of a baseball scattering all over the freeway. at this point i pulled over and shut the engine off and ran away from it. called mechanic he drove the jeep to the shop 20 miles. in this process jeep died 2 different times in which it took a while before it would start and drive again. had cat converter and o2 sensor put in. drove good no problems for 2 months or so. problem came back mechanic took the new cat converter of . i drove it for a few weeks until it died now it is parked. *tr

I purchased this jeep because i was told it needed a transmission, these are the symptoms, when you first start the truck and you put it in reverse, the engine kills. you start the truck up again and put it in reverse, it vibrates and the engine wants to die but the computer tries to increase the rpm to prevent it from dying, you then have to apply the brakes hard, when you put it in neutral, the rpms are at about 2000 and then they come down. when you try driving the car forward it has a vibration and when you are coming to a stop, it does not want to stop, its as the computer is reving the engine like it does in reverse. i have had the transmission rebuilt and it did the same thing, they have taken this transmission out 4 times, changed everything in it 3 times, got another transmission and put all the new parts in that one and still the same problem. i replaced the tcm from a same year grand cherokke, had the dealer flash the computer and still the same, had the try to diagnose it and they thougt it was the map sensor, because of the rpm problem, i changed it and still the same problem. after all these changes, the truck now runs fine for a few minutes, but when it warms up, the same problem occurs, im not sure if thats because the wheather is cooler now. i have so much money tied up in this truck and besides this problem, the truck is in great condition and runs great, can somebody please help me. *tr

While driving with my infant son on the freeway, i felt the vehicle seeming to speed up involuntarily, i.e. without putting my foot on the accelerator. i exited the freeway at the nearest off-ramp, looking for a place to pull over safely and inspect my vehicle. having no place to pull over, i kept driving, by this time having to stomp on the brake to maintain a safe speed on the city street i was driving on. upon coming to a red light and attempting to brake, the car accelerated, thus causing the brake to be ineffective. in order to avoid hitting the car stopped at the light in front of me i had my foot slammed on the foot brake, the emergency brake pulled and the car in park. even with all of this, the car engine revved, the car lurched, smoked and make hideous noises before the light finally turned green and i put the car in drive and continued on. finally, after continuing to drive with my foot depressing the brake pedal, i found a safe place to stop and was only able to stop the car from moving forward by shutting it off. amazingly, no one was hurt, nothing was damaged and we walked away from the incident understandably shaken and confused. no attempt has yet been made to fix the vehicle. we consider ourselves to be extraordinarily lucky. *tr

Involved in a front end collision on 11/5/2007 with extensive front end damage to vehicle. air bag did not deploy and driver (who was wearing a seat belt) sustained a fracture to the sternum with considerable pain after. inspection of the vehicle revealed that the left air bag sensor was broken as a result of the accident, but air bag still did not deploy. at no time did the air bag indicated that there was a possible defect in the system. *tr

I just purchased a 1994 jeep grand cherokee larado from a gentle man in massachusetts. i was told the vehicle had 52,000 original miles on it. i received an affidavit from the original owner claiming he check the wrong box on the title when he sold it to the gentle man i purchased it from. i was told by him that all i had to do was show the affidavit to the dmv when i transferred the title to my name and they would correct the title. well needless to so the dmv said the original title said "actual miles" and that was that. so i titled it to my name and it says 52000 miles "not actual miles". so i started to wonder what was going on and i made an appointment with the local chrysler dealer to check out my vin info. they said that the window vin plate has been replaced. so now i think someone has done something dirty with this vehicle. what do i do now?? *nm

My rear liftgate door hatch when opened fully will not stay up. it falls down all the time and if you are not aware of this it will hit you on your head. you have to hold it up. i have been in contact with chrysler and they claim this is not a warranty issue. the representative informed me it is my responsibility and my problem to repair it. this is a safety issue not a mechanical warranty problem. *nm

Dunlop radial rover lt235/75r15 tire tread separation, no crash, no injury but only lucky to have caught it in time. 1. driver sensed vibration in steering column 2. while being test driven at high speed the rear right tire experienced slow tread separation followed by catastrophic failure 3. tire was replaced with spare and tire company pro-rated a refund for the 3-year old tire. *nm

2 weeks after oil change and driving less than 200 miles the oil indicator comes on. place a quart of oil in , 2 days later the engine smoke and oil needle indicator was below half. 2nd time this occur, you could see the needle going back and forth to empty to 1/2 full. engine smoke but ran after cooling down with more oil. *jb

Dt: on august 15, 2005 the driver's door where the lever is has three bolts to it and it broke. inside of the panel of the door something broke, and it will not let it to be shut because of the panel. the sensor light for door came on and showed that the door was not shut. the consumer went around at right curve and the door came open. could not get the door to shut. held it until the consumer got home. washers were holding the door together. also, has the back doors locked to make sure that it did not happen to the rear doors. contacted the dealer, and they were going to charge the consumer 1500.00 to fix it. *ak

Jeep grand cherokee, early years 1992 - 2001 exhaust manifold cracks with regular occurance and allows carbon monoxide into passenger compartment. i own a 1992 and manifold cracked at 55k and 70k (each $1200 to fix), bought a 1994 same vehicle, manifold cracked at 40k miles. many owners reporting same issue, dealers will replace if pressed but deny problem. i am getting sick (physically) from the vehicle with exhaust coming into cabin. i never know when it will happen. it could cause accident if i passed out.

Consumer states: when she placed the vehicle in park it rolled backwards. the consumer put the emergency brake on and the vehicle still rolled back. she was not sure if the emergency brake worked properly. had to put blocks under the wheels to keep vehicle from rolling. *tt

Automobile dies without reason. it dies while running down the road or sitting at a stop light. internet message boards indicate a large number with the same problem. it also suggests it is the computer. when sensors are replaced the problem continues after a couple of weeks. i have found that if i disconect the positive cable on the battery it will run fine for about the same amount of time. you never know when it will die again, and it does. it is a serious safety problem if it dies on the freeway or in an intersection. on a 30 mile round trip to work and back it will die from 0 to 3 times.*ak

While making a left turn onto main highway another vehicle t-boned consumer's vehicle on driver's side. hood and driver's side door were crushed in. upon impact,driver's side air bag did not deploy. driver sustained arm and stomach injuries, and was transported by ambulance to a hospital. vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. *ak

The engine's exhaust manifold had about 2-3 cracks on top. as a result the exhaust fumes seeps into the passenger compartment. consumer states he has suffered from severe headaches from the fumes. the cause has yet to be determined. *nm the dealer and muffler shop indicated that the cracks were a result of excessive vibration. the vehicle has not been repaired due to cost. *nm

About 5/6 months ago, i noticed that my 1994 jeep grand cherookee had a very bad herky-jerky movement when you try to make a tight turn (especially a u-turn). then very audible noises started coming from the front-end undercarriage everytime you back-up,..or hit a pothole,...especially at low speed. the worst part happened when for the first time,..we hit a pothole at about 55/65 mph,....and the whole front end of the vehicle began to severely vibrate and bounce up and down. this happened a couple of times,..and we were planning on taking it to the mechanic when we noticed that the vehicle was not staying parked even when it's turned off,..put in park,..and the emergency brake put on, especially if there is an elevation/tilt towards either end. we had the transmission checked,..the braking system checked, and they were both fine. it was finally recommended that we have the axle checked,..and it was discovered that this was the problem. the front axle was changed and we also had to pay for a new link pin kit. everithing was fine for a couple of months, and then it started all over again. we took it back to the garage that fixed it the first time, and the same problem was diagnosed again. the replacement of the axle was free this time,..but we had to pay for the left cv booth,..because that was busted too. that was around 5/11/04. the cycle repeated itself again around early june of 2004 and we took the vehicle back to the garage and had the axle replaced again. it's been about a mont later,..and the cycle has begun again. there has never been any loss of control or crashes yet to date due to the vibrations or the axle breaking, but those vibrations sure are scary, especially at 65mph to 70mph on the interstate.*ak

Car will not start. engine turns over but doesn't start. the autoshop told me that the fuel pump is shot. i went on to some jeep forums and there was a considerable amount of people that also had the same problem. after contacting the jeep help line, they basically told me that the car is 10 years old and that i could find anything i wanted on the internet, but for a jeep 1995 that is 9 years old they did submit a recall for the same problem i am having. he was very rude to me also. in these forums i found that people that filed a small claims lawsuit against jeep were paid out of court. so it seems like they know about the problem but are trying to stay away from fixing the problem. most people have had to replace the fuel pump about 3 to 4 times and it still hasn't fixed the problem. also to fix the fuel pump it costs about $500 per incident.*ak

The steering completely went out. ( failed) wile we were driving. thank goodness we were driving slow. note; i found 2500 other jeeps on the web with the same problem.

94 grand cherokee. this will be the forth time that i have replaced the fuel pump in my jeep. same behavior, stalls without notice while decelerating or letting off the accelerator. if not replaced right away it will not stay started when you first start it for the day. eventually it will not start at all. i also had to replace the driver side door hinge which came completely off the door. it was making popping noise when opening and shutting of the door. had it check on several occasions and was told that jeep had a problem with the doors. eventually the door fell off. i have never seen this before. i was shocked to find out that a door was $1600.00. my back door on driver side is popping as well. i guess i don't open and shut the back as much. but the body shop said it will eventually fall off. have there been any other concerns like these two. *jb

Wow, it's very amazing to me that there are so many v6 grand jeep cherokee's hat have cracked exhaust manifolds. we love our jeep's, we are the owners of our second one. this is under the jeep where the exhaust and emissions heats and and cools. the jeep sounds like a hot, hot rod. (i'm not in that age bracket anymore). this manifold is so common now that your local pep boy's, david early tire etc. (small shops) are stocking them?they use to be a factor order item.*ak

When making right or left turns it is difficult to steer and the steering wheel becomes stiff. the front end made a noise as if the frame was cracked or broken. an independent shop replaced ball joints, upper and lower. but the problem still occurred. *ak there appeared to be a frame fracture in the frame member which caused the frame member to crack/snap when the steering wheel was turned. the consumer has spent 1500 dollars trying to correct the problem with no success. *sc *jb

Vehicle fire originating from plastic gas tank.*mr the consumer noticed a small leak on the right rear tire. the tire was changed with the compact spare and the consumer proceeded about 35 miles to have the tire repaired. the consumer was making a turn when he noticed a cloud of smoke coming from the vehicle. when he pulled over he saw that the vehicle was on fire at the rear axle. axle oil was pouring out and covered the plastic fuel tank which was also in flames. the fire was extinguished and the vehicle was towed to a dealer for temporary repair. the consumer was told that the problem was caused by using the compact spare with a smaller diameter on a all time four wheel drive vehicle. both the front a rear axles were so hot that the cover gaskets melted. the manufacturer denied any responsibility. the 1996 jeep grand cherokee was recalled (recall # 757) for a similar problem and the consumer believes the scope of the recall needs to be extended to include other years. the spare tire used caused friction between the both front and rear differentials, resulting in fluid loss and a spark which started the fire. *ph *nlm

My 1994 jeep grand cherokee has fuel line problems that know one can seem to fix. there aren't any leaks, however, it jerks and slips into a neutral state from time to time. first i began to add expensive fuel cleaners (didn't work), then i had it serviced by 3 different mechanics who all performed fuel emission cleaning. currently, it still slips, then jerks forward with extreme force-one time causing an accident. now the jeep cannot stay on when it is started, it comes on and drops dead, i have to race the engine to keep it from shutting back down. in 2001 i had a transmission overhaul therefore it cannot be a transmission problem. the "coolant sensor is bad" signal stays on the computer, i went to replace it, however, jeep eagle and the rest of the autoparts businesses have a different model sensor that doesn't appear to be the same as the one in my jeep, their reply is "i don't know why they look different, it must be the wrong one." the rear lamp failure light is also on yet there are no bad lights in the rear, and i checked every last one of them. during the summer there is water leaking from under the dash board onto driver and the passengers feet. what i would like to know is whether these issues are only my problem or the manufacturer? *la

Frame fuel filter (g7399) suddenly ruptured upon starting the vehicle. this was the first start after the vehicle had sat idle for two weeks in my closed garage. there was absolutely no prior indication of any problem. unknowingly, i drove vehicle, with windows closed, 3 miles with gasoline spraying out of a 50 mm longitudinal slit in the filter body. upon parking/exiting the vehicle the smell of gasoline was overwhelming. the entire left rear wheel area and pavement beneath vehicle was drenched in gasoline. i estimate 8.5 gallons (3/8 of a tank) of gasoline had been sprayed out in only ten minutes of driving. frame fuel filter was installed on 09/28/97 at 37715 miles. filter failed on 10/14/01 at 64460 miles. in my opinion, the problem lies with the frame filter not with the vehicle. *ak

On 10-11-99 the above auto had a flat tire, which was replaced on the vech. by the factory original spare, a t155/90d16. the tires on the balance of the auto were p235/75r15. the spare was placed on the right rear. while driving a few short miles, the car seemed unresponsive in handling, and smoke/fluid started coming out of the transfer cases. the auto was then trailered to the jeep dealer listed. the next day the front and rear transfer cases were inspected, no damage was visible, seals and fluid replaced. since that time, the rear of the auto has been "growling"(as the service tech called it). now the diagnosis is axle problems possible, with the repair bill at approx $1500.00. my contention is that all of this was due to an incorrect size spare being placed in the vechile when manufactured. i have spoken to three engineers in the auto industry that say the problem began with the small spare. has there been any other action with daimler chrysler/jeep on this issue? i am sending a letter today to jeep seekingresolution on the matter. any suggestions.

This is more a potential safety problem with the brake rotor recall being incomplete. after contacting the dealer, and chrysler it seems that within the recall wording there is a potential for the same problem that already exist to be caused by improper practices. whenever a brake rotor is either replaced or resurfaced the brake pads should be replaced. this is done to insure that you don't get foreign debris in the brake contact area. the recall leaves an open in, dealers having an option not to replace the pads. when in fact mechanics are taught to do the replacement anytime rotors are resurfaced or replaced. when chrysler was contacted they put the ball in the dealers court when issues concerning pad replacement arise then the dealer in turn does the same. consumers are forced to buy the pads which should be part of this recall to begin with. they also get hit with a labor charge that is not right because the work is to be done whenever the calipers are taken off the vehicle for anyreason. jeeps own service manual states specific procedures on the servicing of the brake components. they also tell how the brakes work . just in the description itself on how the pads and rotors work is explanation enough on why you wouldn't use used pads with new/resurfaced rotors and vice-versa. people are put at risk becouse if they make the wrong choice at the dealership on deciding to replace the pads or not they are then the ones at risk of facing the same type of problem that jeep is supposidly trying to render. i have copies of complaints, letters, pages from the service manual, reciepts and other agencies i have contacted. so far it seems that noone is interested in trying to prevent a potential problem due to the seemed oversight or negligence of chrysler. they are possibly trying to defray some of the cost by ignoring what every mechanic, college, and other manufacturers dealers all agree that this is improper. *ak

The a\c has gone out three times since i've had the truck. i have had all the o-rings replaced and have had a dye put into system. they cannot seem to find the leak. as of 1/24/00 the a\c is not working. this will be my fourth time having the a\c system checked. is there a problem with this year .i would like any information on this and to also let the maker of this truck know that i have had alot of problems with it.

Going down the highway at 65 mph, noticed a metalic crunching sound, which became a chattering and whuring sound. brought the vehicle into a local dealership, the mechanic said that it was a spun front pinion bearing. after the mechanic fixed the front end, the pinion bearing spun again, this time they had to order a whole new axel for the front end, the part took 42 days to be made. i'm not sure if the part took that long to be made, but i had stated that i wouldlike to purchase a new car, and only aftr i decided not to purchase the new car, because chrysler finacial was looking for more than a $6000 down payment. the part appeared after i told them i idn't want to buy the car. after the parts were replaced, the front end was fine, and i was over $6500 dollars poorer after renting a car and waiting for the part to be made. *ak

When i had brought the vehicle into the dealership to have the power steering pump/gearbox to be replaced, i had mentioned that the front end of the vehicle was making a whuring sound. they were nice enough to fix and charge me for the new steering parts, but didn't think about calling me about the problem with the front end. i was a little bit concerned with the front end after spending $4800 on replacing the front end axle, bearings, and diff plate. they found that the front end had more of the same problems with it as before. they replaced the defective parts that were under warranty, and that took care of the problem.

I was driving down the road, when smoke came billowing out from under the hood. after popping the hood, i noticed that the whole inside of the vehicle was covered in oil, also noticed that the power steering hose was off. went to dealership to get vehicle fixed, spent approx $900 to have a new powersteering pump and gear box assembley, mechanic stated that the gear box housing had rusted through and caused the part to fail.

Upon arriving at destination and parking, rear middle seat belt buckle would not release. passenger was not able to remove belt and was not able to extricate self. passenger was a youth and we were finally able to work her out without cutting belt. buckle is seldom used as we rarely have a passenger in the middle. i have been unable to get buckle to work and dealer says i am on my own for repair. i presume the entire anchor assembly must be replaced..

I was driving home on a beautiful sunny summer afternoon. when the traffic in front of me stopped, i applied my brakes. the pedal when half way to the floor, caught, the went all the way to the floor. i had no brakes. luckily, i remembered to pull the emergency brake, which made me stop immediately only tapping the vehicle in front of me. i pulled the car to the side of the road. i still had a full pedal but if i put it in gear, i had no brakes. i had the car towed to my mechanic to have hom look at the vehicle. it had oly checked the brakes two weeks prior and told me that the brakes were fine. when he pulled off the wheel he found that the rotor had separated from the disc on both of my front wheels leaving me with no brakes. we checked to see if there was any recalls for the brakes and found none for the 1994 jeep grand cherokee. however, the 1989 to 1993 model years were recalled for this problem. i feel that something should be done about this problem before someone isn't as lucky as i am and gets killed

With the key in my pocket--therefore gearshift lever in park position--and the vehicle unatttended, it rolled backwards out of what i thought was a level garage, down my driveway, across the street and down my neighbor's driveway. knocked down part of the driveway wall and continued on, crashing into the corner of the house with the left rear of the vehicle.

My jeep grand cherokee is 2-wheel drive and is not taken off-road nor otherwise driven abusively. despite this i have had four (4) engine mount failures since i purchased the vehicle. some of the failing mounts were mounts that were previously replaced. in addition, the failed engine mounts have caused other damage to the transmission mounts and other engine parts which i have had to replace. the maintenance tech at lithia jeep informed me that the engine mount failures were a common problem but wwere not addressed in any recall or internal chrysler communication to the customers. i would like to have my replacement costs associated with the engine mounts and related repairs returned and would like to have improved engine mounts installed.

Every year the air conditioniar quits working in this jeep, the first time they replaced the evaporator canasiter in 1997, in 1998 it blew nothing but hot air for 1/2 hour took it into them and received a $40.00 charge and told that nothing was wrong! it's 1999 and its blowing hot air again...

Beginning spring of 98 vehicle began to stumble-ever so slightly. by late spring it was cutting out. this was at about 50k. i had it tuned up. the problem continuted until it began to actually stall, especially at high rates of speed. it would always restart-in park-right away. this progressed to stalling at any speed and taking longer and longer to restart. on one particular trip this spring, we ran down the battery trying to get it started and were sold a "dealer" battery, to fix the problem. two blocks from the shop it stalled again. it has been in one shop for a week, and another on 3 separate occassions. the last visit was for battery cable clamps and a fuel filter. well the next day i drove my usual 371/2 miles to work, 12 hours later i went out started it and drove about 6 miles, parked. half hour later, it would not start. after 1 3/4 hours later it started, 5 mi later stopped for a light and it stalled, in the middle of the stree for 1/2 hour. it started and i had no problems the remainder of the miles home at 70mph. there is so set speed with these stalls or warnings. recently it restarted itself, as i was coasting to a safe shoulder area. now it's parked again, i'm very afraid to drive it anymore. please help me find the problem. thanks pat m. *ak

Brake caliper failure was expressley warranted under chrysler's bumper to bumper policy, yet service threatened that if i continued complaining police would be called and i was charged $75.00 for the 'system' test. ase certified mechanic indicated to me that left front caliper had failed to release, thus warping the brake disc. this very mechanic told me to go back to the dealer and get it repaired for free. but passport chrysler denied any malfunction, and pointed to driver negligence as the reason for the "stuck" caliper. transmission failure occurred after warranty, and even though tsb's were abundant regarding defectively designed transmissions, again i was not even offered any assistance to repair the defunct transmission. gee, i guess i'll buy a car there again. *ak

My research on this issue shows a rather alarming rate of transmission failures on 1993-1995 jeep grand cherokees. chrysler without any fight agreed to pay half the cost of repair. i believe they have been doing this with owners who call them to report the problem, in an attempt to keep debate quiet about potential for a recall. the failed transmission component was unavailable for replacement for 6 months due to "national back order". both the dealer and the transmission shop who performed the work, indicated "...we see more of these than we should."

I am having my transfer case replaced for the second time on a 1994 jeep grand cherokee. my jeep has been sitting at the chrysler dealer for almost three weeks because the part is on "national backorder!" doesn't that tell you something right there!! i also almost got hit because the car would not turn or even move! i could not drive up a multi level parking deck because the turn was too tight! none of this seems to be a concern of daimlerchrysler! chrysler has agreed to replae the defective part again, but they want me to pay a deductable of $400. what about my expense of a rental car. what about my inconveinience, what about my almost being hit because the car would not turn! i am not the only jeep owner that has had this problem. each time i get the opportunity to ask an owner, it seems that they too have had this problem. one fellow went as far as contacting a lawyer. what further actions can i take- all i want is a new transfer case that will not "go bad" again and not to pay anything for it! i do only highway driving. *ak

Crack was found on exhaust manifold during annual safety inspection. this required replacement due to hazard of exhaust gas leakage. dealer and chrysler corp. rep. acknowledged that these cracks are occuring. customer service rep. indicated that cracks are occuring on vehicles used for towing or off-road use. my vehicle was never used for towing or off-road use. the crack occurs above the weld near the connection to the exhaust pipe. this is a stress fracture due to flexing of the exhaust system and extreme heat according to chrysler.

The air conditioner and horns went out immediately. they can't seem to find out what the problem is with the air conditioner. i was told "o"-rings, got new ones put on. then it worked well for 3 or 4 days. then it started not putting out cold air again. still not fixed. they continue adding that new stuff. they put in, i forgot what it's called. the horns i used 3 days a week prior. as i picked up my niece to take her to school. then, on top of it all, the alternator and water pump went out had to replace them. the battery died to, 11 months old, replaced. i feel this was all due to the car accident. according to most mechanics, it's normal wear. *ak

Tires lock up with a loud grinding noise when weather is damp or rainy.

Vehicle began to roll backwards with no one inside and no keys in ignition.

Traveling at approx. 6 mph vehicle lurched forward and sounded as if the engine hit the ground. upon investigation noticed engine bracket bolt was completely split in two. engine dropped approx 2 inches on passenger side. engine is now restion on distributor and on steering linkage.
