Since 2008, the Safe Climate Campaign has been fighting global warming by working for big, specific measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We run tough advocacy campaigns to:
- Slash auto emissions and cut the nation’s oil use in half;
- Pressure federal and state governments to adopt steps that dramatically cut global warming pollution;
- Hold polluters and government officials accountable, to achieve the maximum reductions in greenhouse gas emissions; and,
- Educate the public about global warming and the actions that will combat it.
We helped guide the Obama administration to the biggest single step any nation has taken to fight global warming: The 54.5 mpg fuel efficiency standard. This will save consumers $1.7 trillion at the pump, cut oil use by 12 billion barrels and—most important for the climate–keep 6 billion tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. The Safe Climate Campaign presented the case for stringent standards in meetings with Obama administration officials and in columns that appeared on Op-Ed pages in newspapers across the United States, including The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, as well as on Web sites, among them the Huffington Post.
To get the most out of the tough new standards, the Safe Climate Campaign, a project of the Center for Auto Safety, is focused on promoting automobile industry accountability and the industry’s adherence to the mileage and emissions rules. It also pressures the U.S. government to combat global warming by improving energy efficiency in appliances and across the economy. The goal is to sharply reduce reliance on coal-fired power plants and on oil.
