Such vehicles can be sold legally without fixes; Consumer Correspondent finds many recalled cars on lots across U.S.

More than 40 million used cars are sold every year in the U.S. If you buy one, you may wonder what it’s been through . But “Early Show” Consumer Correspondent Susan Koeppen says there is a potential danger with used cars that you may not even think about — recalls.

Late safety recalls cost Toyota record fines

Toyota Motor Corp. agreed Monday to pay $32.4 million in federal fines, settling two federal investigations that found the automaker delayed recalling nearly 6 million vehicles.

Toyota’s board of directors agreed to pay the maximum fine in two separate investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ford Windstar Rear Axle Failure

After years of stonewalling, Ford has agreed to recall 1998-03 Windstars for rear axle that crack and can break in half.  CAS began receiving complaints in 2008 and brought the failures to NHTSA’s attention.  Yet it was not until after John Arout of Staten Island NY began a campaign for a recall and got the New York Times’ attention that June 29, 2011

Ford Recalling 575,000 Windstar Minivans for Rear Axle Problem

Ford will announce on Friday that it is issuing a voluntary recall of 575,000 1998-2003 Windstar minivans because of rear axles rusting, said Said Deep, a Ford spokesman.

In May, the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration opened a preliminary evaluation into broken rear axles on 1999–2003 Windstars. At the time, the agency said it had received 234 complaints, including two reports of accidents (and no injuries).

BMW Recalling 130,000 Cars for Problems With Its Twin-Turbo Engine

BMW is recalling about 130,000 2007–10 vehicles because of emissions problems involving the twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder engines used on many of its most popular models.
The automaker said it had informed the Environmental Protection Agency of the problem, which could require the replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump or changing computer software.
The announcement comes after an ABC News report questioning the safety of the vehicles. ABC interviewed owners who said a sudden loss of power made the vehicles unsafe.

Statement by American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Regarding Brake Master Cylinder Seal Recall: Selected 2005 to 2007 Acura RL and 2005 to early 2007 Honda Odyssey Vehicles

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today announced a voluntary safety recall of 471,820 model year 2005 to 2007 Acura RL and model year 2005 to early 2007 Honda Odyssey vehicles to replace a seal in the brake master cylinder.

Consumer Advisory: NHTSA Repeats Caution to Owners of Various Recalled Ford Vehicles on Fire Risk

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today reminded owners of various makes and models of Ford vehicles previously recalled for faulty cruise control systems to make sure they take their vehicles into Ford dealers for repairs. If not repaired, the vehicles can catch fire, even if they are turned off, parked and unattended.

Toyota Is Recalling 1.1 Million Corollas and Matrixes for Stalling Problem

Toyota said on Thursday that it was recalling about 1.1 million 2005–8 Corollas and Matrixes as well as well as almost 162,000 Pontiac Vibes to fix a stalling problem. The Vibe is a mechanical sibling of the Matrix.

The announcement comes four days after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was intensifying its investigation of the issue.
