Statement by American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Regarding Driver’s Airbag Inflator Recall Expansion
TORRANCE, Calif. December 02, 2011
Honda has expanded a previously announced recall of certain 2001 through 2003 model-year Honda and Acura vehicles to replace the driver’s airbag inflator originally installed in approximately 273,000 additional vehicles sold in the U.S. Affected driver’s airbag inflators may deploy with too much pressure, which can cause the inflator casing to rupture and could result in injury or fatality.
Honda Is Investigated for Air Bag Recall
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating whether Honda delayed the recall of almost 440,000 vehicles for an air bag defect that could allow shards of metal to hit the driver.
Last November, Honda notified the safety agency that it was recalling about 3,900 2001 Accords and Civics because the air bag inflator on the driver’s side might be too powerful. That could result in metal pieces going through the air bag and striking the driver.
Woman Nearly Killed When Airbag Deploys
4/21/2010
MORROW, Ga. (MyFOX ATLANTA) – A college student said a safety device in her Honda exploded in her face and almost killed her. Kristy Williams said she was just sitting at a traffic light when her airbag spontaneously deployed and metal from it cut an artery in her neck.
Williams said doctors told her that she might have saved her own life when a piece of metal from a deploying airbag severed her carotid artery.
Williams was left with a huge scar on her neck and a broken left arm when the driver’s side airbag in her 2001 Honda Civic deployed.
