Ford Probe

March 2001

Dear Mustang/Probe Owner:

Thank you for contacting the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) about your
1984-later Mustang or Probe. CAS has received hundreds of complaints concerning
engine and transmission troubles, peeling paint,
fires, stalling, and unintended
acceleration
.

After its redesign in 1994, the Mustang went from a car plagued with
many problems to one with fewer problems on Consumer
Reports’ frequency of repair ratings. Although the Probe generally
rated well, Ford dropped it after 1997. A common and expensive defect
is peeling paint on 1985-92 models. Ford attempted to
cover up paint problems by buying off aggressive consumers under a secret
warranty and ignoring consumers who didn’t complain loudly. CAS petitioned
the Federal Trade Commission and every state attorney general in 1994
to take action on Ford’s peeling paint secret warranty. In 1987, Ford
recalled about 500,000 1986-87 Mustangs for faulty fuel line couplings
that caused engine compartment fires. In 1996, Ford recalled
2 million 1988-93 Mustangs for defective ignition switches that started
dash fires but refused to recall 1983-87 models with the same ignition
switch. In 1988, CAS sought a recall for stalling at highway speeds
of Mustangs with 3.8 and 5.0L engines but Ford avoided a recall even though
it knew ignition modules mounted on the distributor overheated and caused
the stalling. Ford continued this design through at least 1994. The 3.8L
engine also has a bad head gasket that costs $1,000 to
replace and $4,000 if the engine goes. Ford extended the warranty to 7
years or 100,000 miles on 1994-95 models but refused to extend the warranty
on 1988-93 models with the same failure prone head gasket.

The Probe’s biggest problems relate to body integrity–door
and window fits that lead to squeaks, rattles, and wind/water leaks. Ford
has issued nine TSBs that specifically pertain to water leaks, interior
glass fogging, and tail lamp condensation. Some Probe owners report up
to two inches of water in their cars after washes or thunderstorms. An
expensive water defect that affects Probes is premature muffler
and exhaust rust
.

You’ll find more information on these and other Mustang/Probe defects
below and what you can do about them plus
a complaint box. Your information will
help us build a strong case against Ford as we fight for action on Taurus/Sable
defects.

We need you to support the Center for Auto Safety in our fight for consumer
rights and against poorly designed and unsafe cars. Your contribution
is tax-deductible which
entitles you to our quarterly newsletter, Lemon Times. Please submit
the membership form along with your contribution
and complaint. If you contribute $35 or more, we will send you the current edition of The Ultimate Car Book, by Jack Gillis.

Sincerely,

Clarence M. Ditlow
