Michael Brooks, long-time staff attorney at the Center for Auto Safety, has been appointed by the Board of Directors as the Center’s Acting Director. The Board acted in light of the death on November 10 of the Center’s Executive Director, Clarence Ditlow, a legendary force in auto safety advocacy who had held the post since 1975.

Brooks has been with the Center since 2000, and has participated in its regulatory, legislative and judicial work during that time. He works in all aspects of the Center’s advocacy efforts, including litigation, federal crash data and safety research, rulemakings, press, and Freedom of Information Act work.  He also develops content and manages the Center’s website, www.autosafety.org.

In announcing his appointment Katherine Meyer, the Board’s chair, said, “Michael is intimately familiar with our program and goals, in which he has played an important part for more than sixteen years. The Board has full confidence that he will continue the Center’s efforts in the spirit inspired by Clarence.”

Brooks, 42, was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. He received a J.D. from George Washington University School of Law in 2000 and a B.A from Millsaps College in 1996. He resides in Fairfax County, Va.
